History of Storm King

Storm King Mountain, described by Life magazine in 1964 as “the gateway to the Hudson Highlands, one of the grandest passages of river scenery in the world”, has been the focal point of not only our historical heritage, but the seedbed of environmental and scenic preservation. It has embodied the history of a nation and its connection with the land.

It is a place where the forces of nature are ever present. A place that has affected people emotionally, opening the senses, and connecting them with the ground on which they stand. The response to nature here has always been strong and is the spark behind acts of philanthropy and the creation of vast, beautiful parks. It has awakened people's passion and repeatedly called forth dramatic, sometimes heroic response to preserve its scenic beauty.

All these efforts led Francis F. Dunwell to write in August 1991: “Much of the Highland's landscape has been preserved in its wild state; and where there has been human activity, the built environment shows an unusual respect for nature, the result of conscious efforts to be a part of rather than to dominate the land.”

Over 30 years ago at the foothills of Storm King Mountain in the picturesque village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, Storm King Contracting, Inc. was founded and has remained to date under the same ownership and management of Jeffrey S. Baker, sole proprietor and President.
